2008-09 Season Yearbook

The 2008-09 season offered surprises at every turn for pro hoops fans. In the Eastern Conference, defending champion Boston seemed poised to repeat.  It seemed only LeBron James' rising Cleveland team blocked their way to a championship rematch with Los Angeles. But an injury to Kevin Garnett ended Boston's hopes, and a cavalier playoff effort by James' minions paved the way for surprising Orlando's magical run to the Finals. Elsewhere in the East, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Chicago and Miami all took baby steps toward contention.

In the West, the Lakers, now solely Kobe Bryant's team, seemed hell bent on an NBA championship, having knocked on the door a year earlier. But the strong Western Conference offered stiff competition from resurgent Houston, Denver, and Portland's talented young team. Veteran outfits San Antonio and Dallas still had strong seasons, but began to show their age with injuries to key players. In the end, LA proved too strong for everyone else; coach Phil Jackson won his tenth and perhaps most gratifying championship ring.
